Sloths are arboreal mammals (living most of their lives in trees) and are known for their extreme slowness of movement. Rather than being a disadvantage, this slowness of movement is a survival strategy. It conserves energy so they only need to eat the leaves, buds and young shoots of trees and rarely have to venture down to the ground where predators lurk. It also makes them harder for predators to spot.
Sloths spend 90% of their time hanging upside down in the trees of the tropical rain forests of South America and Central America.
